Box Score STEVENSON, Md. – Widener University opened a three-game MAC Commonwealth baseball series with Stevenson University with a 6-1 win Friday afternoon at Sugar Field.
Stevenson (14-14, 5-5 MAC Commonwealth) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, sophomore John D'Aquanno skied a popup in front of home plate that the wind played with before falling between three Widener players, allowing junior Kevin Kopas to score after leading off the inning with a single.
Widener (14-10, 7-3 MAC Commonwealth) took advantage of a pair of Mustang errors in the third to take a 2-1 lead. With runners at second and third and two outs, Justin Healey reached on an error, allowing both runners to score.
The Pride tacked on a run in the fourth and three more in the ninth. In the fourth, a Nick D'Alessandro double plated Kyle Lowery. Widener utilized three hits and a walk in the ninth to add three insurance runs.
Kopas and sophomore Jake Hall each had two hits for Stevenson as the Mustangs were outhit 10-7. Senior Alec Romanowski took his first loss of the season, falling to 4-1. He worked eight innings and allowed seven hits and three runs (one earned) while striking out four and not issuing a walk.
Michael Elfreth had three hits to lead Widener, while D'Alessandro and Donald Edwards each had two hits. Kyle McKelvy improved to 4-1 on the mound, allowing six hits in seven innings. He retired 12 Mustangs in a row from the second through the sixth innings.
Stevenson and Widener have already postponed Saturday's scheduled doubleheader, which will be made up Sunday at 1:00 at Widener.
