Box Score STEVENSON, Md. – Visiting Catholic scored three times in the first two innings and posted a 6-3 baseball victory over Stevenson University Wednesday afternoon at Sugar Field.
Catholic (4-4) grabbed a run in the first and two more in the top of the second to take a 3-0 lead. Stevenson (4-5) responded and got a pair of runs back in the bottom half of the second.
Sophomore Billy Small reached on a one-out double to left center, then senior Nick Peifer was hit by a pitch. Both runners moved up on a passed ball, then a single to center by senior Matt Myers made it 3-2.
Stevenson threatened to add more runs, as singles by freshman Jonathan Lugo and sophomore John D'Aquanno loaded the bases with one out, but a double play ended the threat.
The Mustangs threatened again in the fourth, loading the bases with two away, but a groundout kept it a 3-2 game.
The Cardinals took a 5-2 lead in the fifth before the Mustangs plated a run in the bottom half to pull within 5-3. Senior Kevin Wu doubled to lead off the inning, then after back-to-back outs, Small singled through the right side to cut the deficit to two. The guests closed out the scoring with a run in the top of the sixth.
Wu, Small, Myers and Lugo each ended up with two hits apiece for Stevenson as the Mustangs were outhit 13-11. Stevenson starter Ryan Martin took the loss, allowing five hits and three runs in 3.2 innings. Catholic starter Jack Hennessy went five innings to move to 2-0 on the season, while Joseph Salzano pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to nail down the save.
Stevenson returns to action Thursday afternoon when it travels to York (Pa.) College for a 3:00 game.
