Box Score STEVENSON, Md. - The No. 11 Salisbury University baseball team posted a pair of big innings as it downed Stevenson University 13-5 in non-conference action at Sugar Field Monday afternoon.
Salisbury (14-6) threw up five runs in the top of the fourth to take a 7-1 lead. The Sea Gulls had just one hit, but took advantage of three walks, a hit batsman, two wild pitches and an error. After a run in the fifth, Salisbury scored four more times in the seventh to go up 12-2.
Stevenson (11-12) found itself down 2-0 after a half inning, but cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the third. Senior Ian Eberly walked, stole second, and scored on a single by classmate Nick Peifer.
The Mustangs grabbed another run in the sixth and scored three times in the eighth. In the sixth, junior Kevin Kopas led off the inning with a double and came in on a single to center by freshman Jonathan Lugo. In the eighth, Lugo added another RBI when he reached on a fielders' choice with the bases loaded. Freshman Matthew Kerber then singled to plate Peifer, followed by sophomore Jimmy Matt making it 13-5 when he reached on an error, allowing freshman Connor Wasilnak to score.
Peifer finished 3-3 at the plate, while Kerber went 2-4 as the Sea Gulls outhit the Mustangs 13-10. Eberly reached base twice on a pair of walks but was 0-2 and saw his 13-game hit streak dating back to March 10 snapped.
Sophomore pitcher Michael Remeikis allowed five hits and six runs (three earned) in 3.1 innings to take the loss for Stevenson. He struck out four. The Mustangs used five pitchers on the afternoon as nine of Salisbury's 13 runs were earned.
Stevenson travels to Gettysburg Wednesday afternoon for a 3:30 contest.
