FREDERICK, Md. – Freshman Christopher Perez tossed a complete-game three-hitter in a 2-1 win in the opener as the Stevenson University baseball team split a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader with Hood College at Frederick Community College on Saturday. The Blazers took down a 5-3 win in the nightcap.
Perez upped his record to 3-0 for Stevenson (11-11, 3-3 MAC Commonwealth) as he carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning of the seven-inning contest. He allowed just one run, in the bottom of the seventh, and walked two while striking out one.
Stevenson grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when senior Craig Joseph doubled with two out, then scored on a single by junior Kevin Kopas. The other Mustang run came in the sixth as sophomore Jake Hall worked a leadoff walk, stole second, and scored when senior Matt Myers reached on an error.
Hood (8-11, 1-5) scored its only run in the seventh as a Dylan Johnson double plated Quinn Fulton
Kopas had a pair of hits in the opener as the Mustangs outhit the Blazers 6-3.
In the nightcap, Stevenson held a 2-1 lead through four innings before Hood posted a four-run bottom of the fifth. After the Blazers took a 1-0 lead in the second, the Mustangs tied it in the top of the third when a Joseph fly ball plated senior Ian Eberly. In the fourth, senior Nick Peifer led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hall.
Myers scored the final Mustang run in the seventh as he led off with a double and scored when senior Kevin Wu reached on a fielders choice.
Eberly had a pair of hits in the nightcap to extend his hit streak to 13 games as the Mustangs were outhit 8-7. Freshman James Wiercinski took the loss on the mound for Stevenson, going four-plus innings and allowing four hits and three runs.
Stevenson returns to action Monday afternoon when it hosts No. 11 Salisbury in a 3:30 non-conference contest at Sugar Field.
