Bats Awaken Late as Mustangs Power Past Hood 12-4

Box Score

STEVENSON, Md. – The Stevenson University baseball team scored a combined 10 runs in the sixth and seventh innings as it erased an early 4-2 deficit to post a 12-4 win over Hood College at Sugar Field Friday afternoon.

Stevenson (10-10, 2-2 MAC Commonwealth) trailed 4-2 entering the sixth inning before pinch hitter sophomore Billy Small blasted a three-run home run to right to give the Mustangs a 5-4 lead.  Senior Nick Peifer reached on a throwing error with one out, followed by a single by sophomore Jake Dimon

After a strikeout, Hood (7-10, 0-4 MAC Commonwealth) replaced starter Jake Franke with Jackson Slotterback, who surrendered the home run to Small, Small's third of the season.

The Mustangs broke the game open with seven runs in the seventh against three Blazer pitchers.  Stevenson took advantage of four hits, three Hood errors and a hit batter.  Junior Kevin Kopas and senior Ian Eberly each had run-scoring singles in the frame, while senior Kevin Wu delivered a two-run double.

Kopas drove in Stevenson's first run in the first inning when his single up the middle scored Wu, who doubled with one away.  The Blazers scored twice in the second and once in the third to take a 3-1 lead, before Eberly opened the bottom half of the third with a walk.  He stole second, moved to third on a fly ball to right by Wu, and scored on a groundout by senior Craig Joseph.

Hood grabbed another run in the top of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead.

Wu went 3-5 at the plate with two RBI, while Kopas and Dimon each had a pair of hits.  Eberly's seventh inning single extended his hit streak to 11 games.  The Mustangs outhit Hood 10-8 and took advantage of a total of five Blazer miscues in the field.

Senior Alec Romanowski improved to 3-0 on the mound, working seven innings and scattering eight hits while allowing four runs (three earned).  He struck out seven and walked two.  Senior Reid Foxwell tossed two perfect innings of relief, striking out three.

Slotterback took the loss for Hood.  Blazer starter Jake Franke allowed five hits and four runs (two earned) in 5.2 innings, striking out three.  Dylan Johnson led the guests with a 3-4 effort at the plate.

Stevenson and Hood face each other in a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader in Frederick Saturday starting at noon.
