Long Ball Does in Mustangs in 10-4 Setback

Box Score

STEVENSON, Md. – Visiting Alvernia University belted five home runs, including two from Chris Burns, as the Crusaders downed Stevenson University 10-4 in MAC Commonwealth baseball Tuesday afternoon at Sugar Field.

Alvernia (8-8, 2-1 MAC Commonwealth) took a 1-0 lead in the first on Burns' first home run of the game, then scored four times in the second to build a 5-0 lead.  Ian Shaffer hit a solo home run with one away, then two batters later, Connor Boyle snuck one over the fence down the right field line to make it 4-0.  Cameron Coons' single up the middle made it 5-0.

Stevenson (8-10, 1-2 MAC Commonwealth) had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom half of the first.  Senior Kevin Wu doubled to right-center, then classmate Craig Joseph was hit by a pitch.  Junior Kevin Kopas walked before a strikeout and a fly out ended the threat.

The Crusaders put the game away with four more runs in the fourth, including a two-run home run by Burns and a solo shot by Dubas.  Alvernia tacked on a run in the fifth to push its lead to 10-0.

Stevenson got on the board in the sixth on a three-run double to the gap in right-center by senior Nick Peifer.  Wu worked a leadoff walk, followed by Joseph getting hit by a pitch and a single by Kopas to load the bases.  Peifer slid into third safely on the play, but came off the bag momentarily and was tagged out.

Senior Ian Eberly knocked in the other run in the bottom of the eighth when his single to left plated senior Matt Myers.  The single also extended Eberly's hit streak to nine games.

Wu, Peifer and sophomore Jake Hall each had two hits as the Mustangs were outhit by Alvernia 14-10.  Alvernia's John Catchmark picked up the win, striking out 11 in six innings while allowing seven hits and three runs.  Crusader pitchers notched 16 strikeouts on the afternoon.

Sophomore Michael Remeikis took the loss for Stevenson, allowing six hits and five runs in 1.1 innings.

Stevenson returns to action Wednesday afternoon, hosting Bard College in a 3:30 game at Sugar Field.
