Box Score STEVENSON, Md. – Highlighted by a seven-run second inning, the Stevenson University baseball team picked up a 10-2 victory over Alvernia University in a game shortened by inclement weather to four and a half innings at Sugar Field. The second game of Saturday's scheduled MAC Commonwealth doubleheader was postponed.
After piecing together a run in the first, Stevenson (8-9, 1-1 MAC Commonwealth) erupted for seven runs in the second. The first three at-bats of the inning all involved errors, as sophomore Jake Hall reached on an error by the shortstop. Sophomore Matt Alcantara bunted to move Hall over, but the attempt was fielded by Alvernia pitcher Matt Backlund, who tried to get Hall, but his throw was wide. The next sacrifice attempt, by sophomore John D'Aquanno, was fielded by the first baseman. Alvernia (7-7, 1-1 MAC Commonwealth) again tried to get the lead runner, but the throw sailed wide and down the line, allowing Hall to score and the other two runners to move into scoring position.
Senior Ian Eberly singled to center to bring in Alcantara and to move D'Aquanno to third. Seniors Kevin Wu and Craig Joseph worked back-to-back walks to plate D'Aquanno, then a double by junior Kevin Kopas cleared the bases and made it 7-0. After a pitching change and an out, sophomore Jake Dimon singled up the middle with the infield in to make it 8-0 before the Crusaders retired the next two batters.
Stevenson had gotten on the board in the first after the first two batters were retired. Joseph walked, and after a Kopas single moved Joseph into scoring position, a single by senior Nick Peifer gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
The Mustangs tacked on two runs in the third to build a 10-0 lead. Eberly singled with one away and scored on a double to the gap in right-center by Wu. Wu later scored on a single by Kopas.
Alvernia grabbed their two runs in the top half of the fourth, as Chris Burns led off the inning with a home run. The next batter, Cameron Coons, doubled, and came home on a single by John Catchmark.
Freshman Christopher Perez picked up his second win of the season on the hill for Stevenson, going four innings and allowing four hits and two runs while registering four strikeouts and a pair of walks. Freshman Jason Bidwell struck out two and surrendered a pair of hits in the fifth for Stevenson.
Kopas finished 3-3 with four RBI, while Eberly had a pair of hits and extended his hit streak to eight games. The Mustangs outhit the Crusaders 8-6 on the afternoon.
Stevenson returns to action Tuesday afternoon when it hosts Bard College in a 3:30 contest at Sugar Field.
