Spartans Outslug Stevenson 13-10

Box Score

YORK, Pa. – Senior Craig Joseph went 2-4 with a home run and four runs batted in for Stevenson, but York (Pa.) outslugged the Mustangs en route to a 13-10 non-conference baseball victory Thursday afternoon at Jaquet Field.

Stevenson (4-6) banged out 12 hits and led 8-1 after three and a half innings, but was outhit by the Spartans (3-9) 17-12.  Joseph knocked in four runs, while senior Nick Peifer went 3-4.  Senior Ian Eberly was 2-4 with two RBI, while classmate Kevin Wu also had a pair of hits.  Sophomore Billy Small belted a two-run home run in the second inning.

Small's two-run blast came as a part of a three-run second that gave the Mustangs a 3-0 lead.  With two away, an Eberly single plated sophomore Jake Dimon after Dimon had singled with two away.  Joseph increased the lead to 4-0 in the third when he led off the inning with his solo home run.

York got a run back in the bottom half of the third before the Mustangs scored four times in the top of the fourth to build an 8-1 lead.  An Eberly single with one away through the right side brought in Jimmy Matt, then with the bases loaded, Joseph delivered what appeared to be a three-run double, however, on appeal, Joseph missed first base.

The Spartans got back in the game by scoring six times in the bottom of the fourth, registering six hits and taking advantage of a pair of Mustang errors.  York rapped out five more hits in the bottom of the fifth to tack on four runs and take an 11-8 lead.

Stevenson got a run back in the sixth as Wu led off with a triple and scored on a sac fly to left by junior Kevin Kopas.  The hosts responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half to lead 13-9 after six.

The Mustangs closed out the scoring in the top of the ninth as Peifer led off with a double and eventually scored on Dimon's sac fly to left.

Freshman Jason Bidwell, the second of five Mustang pitchers on the afternoon, took the loss as he came in in the fourth in relief of starter Matt Myers and worked an inning.  Myers allowed eight hits and seven runs in 3.2 innings, but just one of the runs was earned.  He struck out two.

Stevenson returns to action Saturday as it travels to Elizabethtown for a noon doubleheader.
