Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson women's soccer team erased a 1-0 halftime deficit but ninth-ranked Messiah scored in the 80th minute to escape with a 2-1 victory over the Mustangs in a MAC Commonwealth contest Tuesday evening at Mustang Stadium.
The loss snaps a four-game unbeaten streak for the Mustangs (6-5-2, 3-1-1 MAC Commonwealth) who falls into third place behind Messiah and Arcadia. Stevenson and Albright both have 10 points with the Mustangs having played one less game.
Just over a minute into the contest, DJ Cole unleashed one-timer on a loose ball that came to her at the top of the 18-yard box but it was knocked down by junior goalkeeper Tiffany McKee. The visitors kept the early pressure, getting on the board in the fifth minute.
Goalkeeper Sara Yunez's goal kick bounced at midfield for the Falcons (12-2, 5-0 MAC Commonwealth) leading scorer Marisa Weaver to run onto and carry into the offensive zone. With McKee off her line, Weaver launched a shot from 22-yards out for the score.
Stevenson recorded its first shot in the 32nd minute as a free kick by junior Brittney Celano from 33-yards out sailed high. Messiah outshot the Mustangs, 10-1 in the opening half.
The Mustangs recorded three of the first four shots in the second half, including a goal by senior Alexis Siejack in the 60th minute. Siejack was able to create space from her defender and hit a right-footed shot from 32-yards out that slipped through the legs of Yunez.
The Falcons looked like they were going to reclaim the lead in the 79th minute but Erin Sollenberger could not convert on a cross that went into the six-yard box. But a minute later, Weaver made it count as she hit a left-footed volley after McKee punched away a cross.
McKee finished with 10 saves, marking the third time this season she has recorded at least 10.
Messiah outshot the Mustangs, 22-4 while holding a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Stevenson returns to action on Friday, October 21 when the Mustangs host a MAC Commonwealth contest versus Alvernia on senior night. In pregame ceremonies, the team will honor seniors Siejack, Jordan Porretto and Jessica Demko.
