Box Score 2 OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson University women's volleyball team reached the 20-win mark for the seventh straight season and the ninth time in head coach Dave Trumbo's 10 years with a pair of victories over Stockton University and Rowan University Saturday at Owings Mills Gymnasium. The Mustangs opened with a 3-1 (18-25, 25-23, 25-13, 25-23) win against the Ospreys before downing the Profs 3-0 (25-14, 25-18).
Stevenson (20-7) reached the 20-win plateau with its 11th straight victory with four matches remaining in the regular season. The Mustangs have averaged 25.9 victories per season over that span.
Against Stockton (17-8), junior Annika Schwartz totaled 17 kills and 11 digs for her ninth double-double of the season while also adding four block assists. Sophomore Moriah Savage hit .379 and totaled 13 kills, while freshman Victoria Prokic and junior Lauren Weaver each added seven kills. Prokic notched seven blocks (two solo) as Stevenson had 15 as a team. Sophomore Chelsea Ireland registered six block assists.
Junior Deanna Bradbury finished with 16 digs, while senior Sara Bollinger handed out 25 assists and freshman Julie Nightwine 20.
Lindsay Schuele paced the Ospreys with 15 kills.
Stockton led 11-9 in the first set when it took control with an 8-3 run to take a 19-12 lead on a Stephanie Kovacs kill. The Mustangs pulled back within four, 20-16, on a Weaver kill, but got no closer in the first frame. In the second set, Stevenson jumped out to a 12-5 lead before the guests rallied for a 21-19 lead. The Mustangs battled back with five straight points to go up 24-21 on an Osprey attack error, before a kill from Schwartz closed it out.
Stevenson trailed just once in the third, 5-4, before reeling off nine straight points to take a 13-5 lead on a service ace by Schwartz. The Mustang lead grew to as many as 13 down the stretch. The fourth set, which featured 14 ties, was deadlocked 23-23 when a Savage kill followed by a Stockton attack error closed out the match.
The hosts hit .222 for the match while limiting the Ospreys to .132 hitting, including -.125 in the third. Stevenson's 15 blocks matched a season high and was the fourth double-digit blocking effort for the Mustangs, including the third in six matches. Stevenson also had just five service errors, its third-lowest total of 2016.
Schwartz led the way with 10 kills and seven digs against Rowan, while Weaver finished with eight kills. Senior Kristen Brooks notched seven kills and eight digs while Savage also had seven kills. Bradbury recorded 14 digs, while Bollinger was one of three players with at least 10 assists. Freshman Emily Castro notched 12 assists, while Nightwine had 10.
Stevenson never trailed in the first set as it eventually opened up a 21-8 lead as a kill by Schwartz capped a run of five straight points. A kill by freshman Katie Leftridge closed out the first set. In the second set the Mustangs trailed 6-2 early before a7-3 run capped by a Brooks point tied the frame 9-9. From there, Stevenson gradually pulled away and the set ended on a Prof attack error.
The Mustangs hit .283 for the match, including .417 in the first set, while limiting Rowan to a .101 hitting percentage.
Stevenson returns to action Tuesday night when it hosts St. Mary's (Md.) for Senior Night at Owings Mills Gymnasium at 7:00 pm.
