Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson women's soccer team continued its four-game unbeaten streak as the Mustangs handed No. 6 Arcadia its first loss in 15 games this season with a 3-2 MAC Commonwealth victory over the Knights Saturday afternoon at Mustang Stadium.
It was the first meeting between the two teams where there was more than one goal scored in the contest. In the previous seven meetings, there were three scoreless ties and three 1-0 victories with three of those coming for the Mustangs (6-4-2, 3-0-1 MAC Commonwealth). Each team posted a 1-0 overtime win.
Stevenson also avenged a season-ending 1-0 overtime loss versus Arcadia in last season's MAC Commonwealth semifinals. It was the Mustangs first loss prior to the championship game in four seasons.
The fast pace start for the hosts worked in its favor as the Mustangs went up 1-0 in the opening five minutes of the game. Senior Alexis Siejack found freshman Juliana Portera in the center of the field as Portera took one touch with her left foot before ripping a shot to the top left corner over the outstretched arms of Evelyn Feigeles.
Arcadia entered the game having trailed for only 12:18 this season.
The Knights (14-1) were whistled for a foul at the top of the 18-yard box in the 36th minute setting up a free-kick for senior Jordan Porretto from straight away. Porretto wrapped the ball around the wall and put the hosts up 2-0 with a goal to the lower right corner.
The two teams combined for just one shot in the final 9:40 as the visitors shot went wide with just over five minutes remaining.
Stevenson earned a free kick early in the second half from 25 yards near the right sideline. The floater by junior Julia Webb found the head of classmate Kailee Ziegler, but Ziegler could not get enough power behind it as Feigeles was there for an easy save.
Following a corner kick by the Mustangs, Webb was alone on the back post about eight-yards out but Feigeles kept it a two-score game with a diving grab on the post.
On the third consecutive long throw-in by freshman Alayna Roesener, Ziegler flicked a header towards the back post that went in, but the played was whisteled dead as the Mustangs were called for a foul in the box.
In the 57th minute, the Mustangs defense tried to play the ball backwards but did not get enough pace on the ball as Arcadia leading scorer Kayla Haberbosch scored her 16th goal of the season for the 16th-ranked scoring offense in Division III as she hit a one-timer on a loose ball in the box.
But the hosts responded 45 seconds later off another long throw by Roesener that found the feet of freshman Brianna Christie who finished with a low shot to the left corner to put Stevenson back up two, 3-1.
The Knight got back within one on their third straight shot following a corner kick. Jess Kelly's header off the corner kick was saved on the line by junior Brittney Celano before Mia Bertolami's follow-up shot dinged off the crossbar. But Tara Smith was there for the rebound to put it away.
With just over two minutes remaining, Veronica Garcia got a touch on the ball off a centering pass to the six-yard box, but her touch did not enough on it as junior Tiffany McKee was there for her second save.
Arcadia, who was one of the last four unbeaten teams in Division III, came into the game having allowed just two goals in its last six games while scoring 29 during that time.
The Knights finished with a 14-11 advantage in shots, including 9-6 in the second half while the Mustangs held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Stevenson returns to action on Tuesday, October 18 when the Mustangs host No. 12 Messiah in a MAC Commonwealth contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
