HAVERFORD, Pa. - The trio of sophomores Lauren Weaver and Annika Schwartz and freshman Moriah Savage combined for 57 kills as the Stevenson women's volleyball team split with Salisbury and Haverford on day one of the Haverford/Swarthmore Invitational Saturday afternoon at Calvin Gooding Arena.
The Mustangs (2-1) defeated Salisbury, 12-25, 25-20, 25-27, 25-11, 15-9 before falling to Haverford, 20-25, 19-25, 22-25.
The win over the Sea Gulls (1-1) was the second-straight over Stevenson's former Capital Athletic Conference rival after dropping the first 17 matches. The Mustangs defeated Salisbury in the 2013 NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship.
After totaling just 12 points in the first set, the Mustangs won the second set by five points before dropping the third by two. Trailing 2-1, Stevenson dominated in the fourth set to force the decisive fifth set.
Weaver totaled a team-high 15 kills while Schwartz added 11 kills and 14 digs. Junior Kristen Brooks finished with seven kills and a match-high 17 digs.
Against the Fords (3-0), who are receiving votes in the AVCA Division III Coaches Poll, the Mustangs totaled 17 errors and hit just .181 in a straight sets loss. Stevenson also totaled no team blocks compared to five for Haverford.
Schwartz led the way with nine kills and nine digs while Savage totaled eight kills. Meanwhile, junior Sara Bollinger recorded 16 assist and 10 digs.
The Mustangs are back in action on Sunday, September 6 for day two of the Haverford/Swarthmore Invitational where they will face host Swarthmore at 12:00 p.m. and City College of New York at 4:00 p.m.
