Long Ball Hurts Mustangs in 4-2 Loss to Baruch

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's soccer senior Zachary Martin scored a goal in the 87th minute to get the Mustangs within one, but it wasn't enough as Baruch held on for a 4-2 victory Saturday afternoon at Mustang Stadium.

The game marked the first-ever meeting between the schools while also marking the first time since 2003 that the Mustangs (0-2) have dropped back-to-back games to start a season. It was also the first time the team has dropped a home opener in four seasons in Mustang Stadium.

The Bearcats (2-0) got on the board first after Alexander Marano was able to collect a cross from William Rosales and fire it to the back of the net. However, Stevenson was able to level the match at 1-1 just 1:14 later as Reid Hawkins converted on a penalty kick.

Baruch took a 2-1 advantage into halftime following a goal by Constantin Meleties in the 36th minutes. Stanley Goldberg launched a pass 90 yards away that Meleties was able to run onto and beat the goalkeeper to the low far corner.

Just 4:12 into the second half, the Bearcats would beat the Mustangs defense long again as Rashid Allah Morad from Oshae Miller 60 yards down the field.

Stevenson would continue to threaten, outshooting Baruch 12-4 in the second half. Martin would finally get the Mustangs on the board in the second half after freshman Carmen Caltabiano played a ball from midfield.

The goal cut the Mustangs deficit to just one with just over three minutes to play, but Stevenson would not be able to get off another shot. The Bearcats would add an insurance goal after the Mustangs defense misplayed the ball.

Senior Ryan Callinan finished with four saves while his counterpart Xavier Carrillo totaled seven.

Stevenson returns to action on Sunday, September 6 when the Mustangs host Gwynedd Mercy beginning at 4:00 p.m.
