Box Score PATCHOGUE, N.Y. - Highlighted by the first career goals by freshman Colin Horne and junior Nick Adams, the Stevenson men's soccer team posted a 2-1 victory over host St. Joseph's (L.I.) to win the Gary Smith Invitational Tournament Sunday afternoon at Danzi Stadium.
Senior Logan McCarron was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament after totaling one goal on three shots. Meanwhile, senior Reid Hawkins was named to the All-Tournament Team as he totaled a goal and an assist.
The Mustangs (3-3) have won back-to-back games and three of their last four. The team is 11-5 in the month of September since the start of the 2014 season.
Horne gave Stevenson a 1-0 first half lead when senior Zachary Martin played a through ball to the rookie who chipped it in for his first-ever points.
Justin Busto tied to game for the Golden Eagles (1-4) with a goal in the 58th minute. Busto scored on a cross form Kyle Conway from outside of the box.
Less than 10 minutes later Adams scored an unassisted goal on his only shot of the game for the game-winner.
Senior Ryan Callinan totaled three of his six saves after the Adams goal to preserve his third second-straight win of the season.
St. Joseph's (L.I.) outshot the Mustangs 20-8, including 12-4 in the second half, while holding a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Stevenson returns to action on Wednesday, September 16 when the Mustangs host a non-conference contest versus Neumann beginning at 7:00 p.m.
