Box Score PATCHOGUE, N.Y. - Highlighted by four different goal scorers, the Stevenson men's soccer team posted a 4-2 non-conference victory in the Gary Smith Invitational over FDU-Florham Saturday afternoon at Danzi Stadium on the campus of St. Joseph's (L.I).
The Mustangs (2-3) totaled their largest goal total of the season and the most since a 4-1 victory over Gwynedd Mercy on Sept. 13, 2014. The team totaled at least four goals in four wins last season.
The Devils (2-2) had an opportunity to take an early lead in the ninth minute but senior goalkeeper Ryan Callinan came up with a huge save off a penalty kick.
AJ Carnevale would give the Devils a 1-0 lead four minutes later after he scored off of a loose ball in the box. However, on the very next shot, Stevenson senior Logan McCarron buried a shot from long range off of a pass from classmate Reid Hawkins, tying the game at 1-1 just over two minutes later.
FDU-Florham outshot the Mustangs 13-6 in the first half and 27-11 over all, but Callinan totaled a four saves in the opening 45 mintues en route to a season-high nine saves in his first win of the year.
Sophomore Scott Dorman gave the Mustangs the lead in the 29th minute, scoring off a corner kick from freshman Iliyas Mirza. Mirza scored a goal of his own less than ten minutes later, giving the visitors a two-goal advantage.
Carnevale tallied his second goal of the night for the hosts, to cut the Devils deficit to one 10:05 into the half. But that would be the closest they would get as Hawkins converted his third penalty kick of the season.
Stevenson continues play at the Gary Smith Invitational on Sunday, September 13 when the Mustangs take on host St. Joseph's (L.I.) beginning at 2:00 p.m.
