Miller Totals Five Hits, Six RBIs as Mustangs Fall to Arcadia in Extras, 17-16

Box Score

STEVENSON, Md. - Stevenson baseball senior Troy Miller went 5-for-7 with two doubles and six RBIs, but Arcadia used two six-run innings to erase a 10-run deficit and force extra innings before an RBI-double by Andonis Yiantsos in the top of the 10th gave the Knights a 17-16 Commonwealth Conference victory Monday at Park Field.

The Mustangs (13-13-2, 10-5 MAC) scored a season-high 16 runs on 13 hits to mark their fourth-straight game with at least 10 runs scored. However, the team is just 2-2 in those games after losing 10-run leads in both losses.

Stevenson scored a run in each of the first three innings to take a 7-2 lead. Four of those runs came in the second, highlighted by a solo home run from senior Brody Tennant and a two-run double by Miller.

The Knights (13-9, 9-6 MAC) plated two more runs in the fifth to pull within three before the Mustangs erupted for seven in the bottom of the inning with six different players driving in at least one run. Miller drove in two with an RBI-double to start the scoring and RBI-single to cap it.

Trailing 14-4 in the top of the sixth, Arcadia needed just two hits to severely cut into Stevenson's 10-run lead. Connor Arsenault had a two-run single to center before Tom Wagner hit a grand slam to left to cut the Knight's deficit to four.

Arsenault finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs in relief of the injured Jordan Draude while Wagner was 3-for-5 with five RBIs.

The Mustangs pushed their lead to six in the seventh when senior Frederick Casper scored on a wild pitch and Miller added his sixth RBI of the day with an infield single.

However, Arcadia pushed across another six runs across in the eighth, this time tying the game at 16-16. Five of the first six batters reached base, accounting for four runs on leadoff triple, two doubles, a single and a walk.

With the bases loaded and one out, the Knights tied the game on a double play ball that could have ended the inning, but after getting the lead runner at second, an errant throw by Stevenson allowed two runs to score with the tying one unearned.

Arcadia threatened again in the ninth after the first two batters singled and doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs. The Mustangs then went to junior Alec Romanowski who retired the next three batters on just seven pitches.

Arsenault led off the top of the 10th with a double before pinch-runner Pat Shevlin advanced to third on a balk with one out. Drew Coisson struck out swinging before Yiantsos drove in Shevlin for the game-winning run with a double to left center.

Miller was the only player with more than one hit for Stevenson who totaled a season-high 16 walks. Casper was 1-for-2 with two walks and two RBIs while junior Ian Eberly was 1-for-4 with two walks and two RBIs.

The Mustangs allowed the leadoff batter to reach base in seven of the 10 innings and stranded 15 runners on base. The pitching staff allowed 16 earned runs while nine of the Knights' 13 hits went for extra bases.

Junior Tom Connell suffered his third loss of the season while junior Trevor Fitzsimmons, who is 3-0 with three saves this year, was tagged for five runs on five hits over 2.0 innings.

Stevenson hosts a non-conference contest versus Neumann on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
