Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Scott Zanghellini went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs while Brad DeMartino scattered eight hits over 7.0 innings while striking out four as Gettysburg posted a 4-0 victory over the Stevenson baseball team Tuesday at Kirchhoff Field.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Mustangs (4-6-2) who out-hit the Bullets, but left 12 runners on base and were 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
Junior Tom Connell allowed just one hit and stranded five base runners through the first four innings for Stevenson while DeMartino allowed four hits and stranded six through five. After allowing a double by junior Kevin Wu to put runners on second and third in the fourth, he got senior Brody Tennant to ground out to short and keep the game scoreless.
Gettysburg (9-4) got all the run support it would need in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out, two-run single to left by Zanghellini.
A walk by Connor Tom loaded the bases for the Bullets with one out and ended the day for Connell who was replaced by freshman Michael Remeikis. Remeikis got Henry Klimowicz to pop out to second before Zanghellini's two RBIs gave Gettysburg a 2-0 lead.
The Bullets added two more insurance runs in the sixth after loading the bases with one out for the second-straight inning on a bunt single by Mike Kielbasa, double by Andy Kelley and walk by Chuck Probst. Kielbasa scored on a sacrifice fly to shallow left before Kelley stole home on a double steal which also moved Probst to second.
The Mustangs threatened in the top of the seventh after back-to-back singles by senior Frederick Casper and freshman John D'Aquanno to leadoff the inning, but DeMartino retired the next three in order to preserve the shutout.
Gettysburg also loaded the bases in the seventh, but sophomore Matt Phillips retired two of first three batters he faced to allow Stevenson to escape with out another run.
D'Aquanno, junior Craig Joseph and sophomore Kevin Kopas each had two hits for the Mustangs who totaled nine compared to seven for the Bullets.
Connell suffered the loss after allowing two runs on four two hits and walking four through 4.1 innings. He also threw four wild pitches.
Stevenson hosts a non-conference contest versus Elizabethtown on Wednesday at Park Field. First pitch is at 3:30 p.m.
