Mustangs Battle No. 19 Bridgewater (Va.) to Second Tie of the Season, 7-7

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Stevenson baseball freshman John D'Aquanno scored the go-ahead run on an error in the top of the eighth, but Austin Batten tied the game with an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth as No. 19 Bridgewater (Va.) avoided its fourth-straight loss with a 7-7 tie Thursday at Jopson Athletic Complex.

Stevenson (1-5-2) is unbeaten in its last two for the first time in last 24 games since sweeping the first two games of a three-game series with Arcadia on Apr. 12, 2014.

After junior Ian Eberly scored the game's first run in the top of the first, the Mustangs held the lead until the bottom of the sixth when the Eagles plated three to erase a 4-3 deficit.

Stevenson extended its lead with two runs in the top of the fifth after loading the bases with no outs. Senior Troy Miller led off with a single before junior Craig Joseph was hit by a pitch. Junior Kevin Wu then singled through the left side before a sac fly by freshman Jake Dimon and an RBI-ground out by junior Matt Myers gave the Mustangs a 4-1 lead.

However, the Eagles (10-4-1), ranked No. 19 in the D3baseball.com poll, answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles by Batten and Kenner Berry to cut their deficit to one.

Bridgewater then took the lead for the first time in the bottom of the sixth on a three-run homer down the left-field line by Batten to put the Eagles in front, 6-4.

Stevenson tied the game with two runs in the top of the seventh. After Joseph was hit by a pitch with one out, he scored on a double to left center by Wu. During the next at-bat, Wu advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a fielding error.

The Mustangs retook the lead at 7-6 in the top of the eighth after consecutive errors with one out. D'Aquanno laid down a bunt and continued to second on a throwing error before scoring on a second throwing error with two outs.

Bridgewater tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on what should have been the final out of the game. Batten reached on an error to lead off the inning before a walk by Darren Yoder put runners on first and second. Both runners advanced into scoring position on a sac bunt by Berry.

Justin Petock then fouled out to right on what should have been the third out, but because of the error on Batten's lead-off at-bat, he scored from third to tie the game at 7-7. With Yoder on third and two outs, Stevenson intentionally walked Ryan Leake before junior Trevor Fitzsimmons retired Dustin Garst to send the game to extra innings.

Fitzsimmons then prevented the Eagles from scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th after they had a runner on third with just one out. He got Derrik Walling to strikeout looking before retiring Bratten on a fly ball to right to preserve the 7-7 tie before the game was called due to darkness.

Miller went 3-for-5 with a walk and an RBI while Wu was 2-for-5 with an RBI-double. Five other Mustangs had one hit each while Stevenson left 14 runners on base.

Batten finished 2-for-6 with three runs and four RBIs for Bridgewater.

Only 10 of the game's 14 runs were earned as the two teams combined for seven errors. Eagles pitchers also hit three batters, three of which came from starter Brandon Poole who was tagged for four runs on five hits while walking three over 4.0 innings.

Stevenson returns home for four games at Park Field this weekend beginning with a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader versus Hood on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Mustangs will then host a conference doubleheader with Alvernia on Sunday starting at noon.

The Crusaders handed Stevenson a 9-4 loss in its home opener on March 13.
