Box Score 2 OSWEGO, N.Y. - In a match-up of the top two penalty killing units in Division III this season, it was a power play goal by Brianna Rice at 15:12 of the second period that proved to be the game-winner as Oswego shutout the Stevenson women's ice hockey team Friday at Marano Campus Center Arena, 2-0.
The loss was the first for the Mustangs (16-7-1) since January 10, snapping a seven-game unbeaten streak. It was also their first defeat against a top-10 team this season after Stevenson knocked off No. 10 Utica 2-1 on January 17.
The Mustangs, who boast the nation's second-best penalty kill at 91.0 percent, killed off five of six power play opportunities for the Lakers. Meanwhile, Oswego, the national leader on the penalty kill at 94.3 percent, held Stevenson to 0-for-3 with the extra-man.
After neither team found the back of the net in the first 20 minutes, Lizzy Marks sent a puck through the crease in the second where Erika Truschke got a piece of it before Rice slid it past junior Sarah Modzelewski for a 1-0 lead with 4:48 left.
It was Rice's team-leading 11th goal of the season.
The Lakers (17-4-1) added an insurance goal early in the third period when Olivia Ellis scored off a back-handed pass from behind the net from Andrea Noss just 35 seconds in to give head coach Diane Dillon her 100th career victory.
Stevenson, who was shutout for the third time this season, all by 2-0 margins, was outshot 28-20 as Bridget Smith earned her sixth shutout of the season with 20 saves.
Modzelewski made 26 saves for the Mustangs who blocked eight shots, including three each by freshman Natalie Rosendahl and junior Rachel Martell.
The two teams conclude their two-game series on Saturday where Stevenson will look for its second win in six all-time meetings against the Lakers. Faceoff is at 3:00 p.m.
