BEVERLY, Mass. - In a battle of the Colonial Hockey Conference unbeaten, the Stevenson women's ice hockey team took sole possession of first place with a 2-0 victory over Endicott Friday evening at Raymond J. Bourque Arena.

It was the third shutout and second-straight this season for the Mustangs (7-0, 5-0 CHC), who finished the final 50 seconds of the game killing off a six-on-four. The team has allowed just one goal over the last 250:13

Senior Sarah Modzelewski recorded five of her 27 saves during the penalty kill while posting her fourth career shutout and first this season. The Stevenson defense also blocked 16 shots including two by senior captain Tori Emoff with one coming in the final minute.

Just 1:48 into the opening period, the senior trio of Brooke Webber, Megan Alexander and Jessie Capanelli connected to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead as Capanelli scored right on the doorstep. The goal was the first given up by Vendela Jonsson in five games.

The line of Alexander, Capanelli and senior McKenzie Taggart has combined for nine goals and 11 assists this season.

The two team's, who both entered the game perfect on the penalty kill, were each whistled for a penalty in the opening period. The Mustangs killed off their 20th-straight penalty this season and blocked the only shot attempt by the Gulls (5-1, 4-1 CHC). The Stevenson penalty kill finished 4-for-4.

The Mustangs are one of four teams in Division III to have not allowed a power play goal.

Three minutes later, Endicott was sent to the penalty box and senior Katie Abbott scored Stevenson's ninth power play goal of the season after finishing a rebound attempt by sophomore Chelsea Blackburn.

The Mustangs and Gulls, who came into the game averaging 46.3 and 52.7 shots, respectively, each finished with a season low in shots as the hosts outshot Stevenson, 27-22.

Endicott totaled 22 of its 27 shots in the second and third periods combined, including 13 in the third. The Mustangs defense recorded 11 blocked shots during the final two periods.

Stevenson and Endicott face-off in the second of a two-game series tomorrow, November 21 beginning at 3:00 p.m.
