Box Score MADISON, N.J. – Margaret Wentzel scored a pair of goals to lead seventh-seeded Alvernia University to a 4-0 win over No. 4 seed Stevenson University in the ECAC Division III Mid-Atlantic Field Hockey Championship final Sunday at Robert T. Shields Field on the campus of FDU-Florham. The Crusaders finish at 15-7, while the Mustangs, who were making their second straight ECAC title game appearance, finish 14-10.
Alvernia took a 1-0 lead 8:31 into the game when Andrea Wysocki found herself on a breakaway. She dribbled around freshman Stevenson goalie Talia Parrish and was able to slide a shot past a Mustang defender for her fourth goal of the season. The Crusaders extended the lead to 2-0 when Wentzel won a battle with a Stevenson defender eight yards out and the ball trickled into the right side of the goal. It marked Wentzel's 29th goal of the season.
The Crusaders took a 3-0 lead into halftime when Summer Liberto took a short pass from Wentzel off a penalty corner and fired to the far right post for her 13th goal of the season. Wentzel scored her second goal of the game 10 minutes into the second half when she fired home a rebound of her initial shot to make it 4-0.
Stevenson held a 14-11 shot advantage for the game, with both teams registering seven shots on goal. Parrish made four saves for Stevenson, while Alvernia counterpart Rebecca Brosious stopped seven shots en route to her third shutout of the season. The Mustangs also held a 12-8 advantage in penalty corners.
