Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Senior Kelly McKenzie totaled 10 kills as Stevenson University downed Alvernia University 3-0 in MAC Commonwealth Conference women's volleyball on Senior Night Tuesday at Owings Mills Gym. The set scores were 25-11, 25-10, 25-16.
With the win, the Mustangs (24-7, 8-0 MAC Commonwealth) extended their win streak to 11 games while finishing conference play unbeaten for the fourth straight season. Stevenson improved to 11-1 at Owings Mills Gym this season. The Crusaders fall to 12-16 and 3-4 in the MAC Commonwealth.
McKenzie hit .450 on the evening. Sophomore Annika Schwartz totaled eight kills on .538 hitting, while junior Kristen Brooks hit .467 and added seven kills. Junior Sara Bollinger handed out 36 assists, while sophomore Deanna Bradbury led the Mustangs defensively with 14 digs.
As a team the Mustangs hit a season-high .439, the seventh-highest single match total in program history.
After being tied 6-6 early in the first set, Stevenson reeled off six straight points to take a 12-6 lead in a run that had a pair of kills by freshman Moriah Savage. After the Crusaders pulled within 12-9, the Mustangs took control with an 11-0 run capped by a Bollinger kill to make it 23-9.
The second set was all Stevenson as it jumped out to a 14-1 lead. Schwartz had four kills in the set-opening run, and the Mustangs hit .526 in the frame, posting 11 kills against just one error on 19 attempts.
Alvernia hung tough in the third set, with the set tied 10-10 before Stevenson started to gradually pull away, taking an 18-13 lead on a service ace by sophomore Megan Hren. A kill by freshman Lauren Jan closed out the match.
Prior to the match seniors McKenzie and Kara Anderson were honored as the pair was playing in their final regular season home contest.
Stevenson closes out the regular season Saturday when it travels to Frostburg State for a non-league trimatch. The Mustangs take on the host Bobcats at 11:00 am before facing St. Mary's (Md.) at 2:00. SU opens the postseason on Wednesday, November 4 when it will host a MAC Commonwealth semifinal as the tournament's No. 1 seed.
