Hawkins, Martin Lead Mustangs to 3-2 Victory Over Albright

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Senior Reid Hawkins scored the game-winning goal while senior Zachary Martin recorded three points as the Stevenson men's soccer team posted a crucial 3-2 MAC Commonwealth victory over Albright Tuesday evening at Mustang Stadium.

With the win, the Mustangs (5-9-1, 2-3 MAC Commonwealth) remain in reach of playoff contention as the team is one win out. Stevenson is tied with Widener for sixth place and holds the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Pride. The top five teams advance to the conference tournament.

Sophomore Thomas Taylor scored his second goal in the last three games just 4:40 into the contest as Martin sent a through ball into the box. Taylor totaled just one goal in his rookie campaign a season ago.

Peter Bockarie responded for the Lions (1-13-1, 0-6 MAC Commonwealth) just 44 seconds later as hit shot from 30 yards out beat senior goalkeeper Ryan Callinan to the top left corner. Bockarie's shot hit the crossbar and went straight down into the goal.

Martin reclaimed the lead for the hosts in the 21st minute as he beat his defender and flicked the ball overtop of goalkeeper Austin Aldinger. It is the third goal this season for Martin who totaled a career-best five a season ago.

Facing a one goal deficit for the second time in the game, Albright came back to level the game at 2-2 as Lawrence Pierre got behind the defense on a pass from Bockarie and beat Callinan who came off his line to challenge the play.

After Martin was taken down in the box in the 85th minute, Hawkins fired the penalty kick to the low left corner to give the Mustangs a 3-2 advantage. Hawkins, who leads the team with five goals, is 4-for-5 on penalty kicks this season.

The Mustangs outshot the Lions, 13-10, while Albright held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, October 24 when the Mustangs travel to Alvernia for a MAC Commonwealth contest beginning at 1:00 p.m.
