Box Score CHESTER, Pa. - Stevenson field hockey freshman Sara McVey scored with 2:11 remaining in regulation as the Mustangs posted a 3-2 MAC Commonwealth victory over Widener Saturday afternoon at Edith R. Dixon Field.
The Mustangs (6-7, 2-1 MAC Commonwealth) have won six of their last seven games and are outscoring opponents, 20-11, after starting the season with six-straight losses with only four goals.
Meanwhile, it is the fifth game-winning goal for McVey who has totaled 15 points on six goals and three assists in her last eight games.
The 10th goal of the season by junior Rosemarie Neiva gave Stevenson an early 1-0 lead. Senior Meg Gill picked up her first point of the season with her ninth career assist.
The Pride (5-5, 1-2 MAC Commonwealth) tied the game at 1-1 late in the first half as Alyssa Buckley scored an unassisted tally with 2:39 remaining in the opening period. The Mustangs outshot Widener, 7-1 in the half and held a 5-0 advantage in penalty corners.
Freshman Alexis Young gave Stevenson a one-goal lead in the 60th minute on the first career point and assist from classmate Katelyn Byram. But Widener responded with a goal just 2:31 later.
Tied at 2-2, McVey scored an unassisted tally and the defense blocked the final two shots by the Pride as the Mustangs remain in a tie for third place in the conference.
Stevenson returns to action on Tuesday, October 13 when the Mustangs host a non-conference contest versus local-rival McDaniel beginning at 7:00 p.m.
