Box Score 2 UTICA, N.Y. - Stevenson women's ice hockey junior Madison Lange scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 5:27 left in the third period while junior Sarah Modzelewski stopped a season-high 36 shots as the Mustangs posted a 2-1 victory over Utica Saturday at Utica Memorial Auditorium.
Stevenson (12-6) posted its first win in three meetings against the Pioneers who were ranked at No. 10 in the latest d3hockey.com Women's Top 10 national poll released Monday. The Mustangs also improved to 7-2 on the road this season and 4-0 against the ECAC West. They are also 7-3 against the ECAC East.
Lange now has points in three consecutive games and has scored the game-winning goal in each of the last two. She has a plus-seven rating over her last four games and leads the team with three game-winning goals this season.
Modzelewski stopped the first 32 shots she faced before the Pioneers scored with 4:23 to play in the third period.
Modzelewski also had a season-high 36 saves in a 3-2 win over UMass Boston in the Codfish Bowl Cup championship game on January. Her career-high is 50 saves set in a 3-0 loss at Elmira on Feb. 2, 2013.
Stevenson is now 10-0 this season when scoring first and 10-0 when leading after the second period. Neither team found the back in the first period despite Utica (5-5-2) holding a 15-2 advantage in shots.
The Mustangs, who were outshot 36-13, finally broke through with 1:42 left in the second period when junior Katie Abbott was credited with her ninth goal of the season off an assist from junior Erin McLoughlin. The duo has combined for 12 goals and 25 points this season. McLoughlin leads the team in assists with nine, five of which have come on goals by Abbott.
Lange gave Stevenson a 2-0 lead at 14:23 of the third off an assist from freshman Kellen Wittman who also extended her point streak to three games, totaling all five of her points this season over that stretch.
Despite being outshot and being on the short end of a 23-19 margin in faceoffs, the Mustangs killed off four Utica power plays and has allowed just one power play goal in the last 27 opportunities during an eight-game stretch.
Stevenson travels to Sacred Heart next Friday and Saturday. The Mustangs are 1-3-1 in five all-time meetings against the Pioneers and went 1-1-1 a year ago. Faceoff on Friday is at 7:00 p.m. Fans can listen live on the Mustang Sports Network here.
