Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson men's soccer team overturned an early 1-0 deficit with back-to-back goals from freshman Thomas Taylor and senior Jon Grant, but St. Joseph's (L.I.) tallied the game-winner with just over 10 minutes left to defeat the Mustangs 3-2 Saturday at Mustang Stadium.
Grant's goal was the first of his career while junior Ryan Callinan made three saves in goal for Stevenson (1-1). Avery Gomez recorded five stops to earn the win for St. Joseph's.
The visitors got on the board quickly after some early pressure in the Mustangs' end. The home side failed to clear a corner into the box and Eagle defender Brian O'Sullivan made them pay by deflecting Enrique Tirado's low effort into the back of the net.
Stevenson nearly pegged back within a minutes' time, but sophomore Adnan Alic ripped his shot just wide of the mark at the near post.
The Mustangs did not have to wait long for the equalizer, however, as in the eighth minutes junior Zachary Martin put Taylor through on goal. The rookie forward skipped past his defender and then coolly finished to the keeper's right to put the game back on terms.
Three minutes later the hosts could have taken the lead, but Gomez bundled Taylor's near post effort over the line for a corner.
Neither team could create a concrete chance over the next 15 minutes as play bogged down in midfield. St. Joseph's midfielder Alex Guadagno came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 25th minute, but saw his glancing header go wide off of a corner.
Just past the half-hour mark, the hosts took the lead through Grant. Classmate Yianni Sarioglou played Grant through on the left channel and the White Marsh, Md., native calmly slotted a low shot just inside the back post under Gomez's outstretched arm.
The hosts almost doubled their lead a minute later, but freshman Adam Diabagate was denied after neatly flicking on a cross from the left.
Eagle freshman forward Chance Casey brought the visitors level in the 35th minute by latching on to a ball over the top and then lofting a ball over Callinan's head from 20 yards out. The score line stayed that way into halftime.
Stevenson started well out of the break, possessing and sending Taylor clear, but his shot was turned to the side by Gomez.
Gomez was up to the task again on the hour mark as Grant glided on to a through ball and nearly put the Mustangs out in front again, but his left-footed shot was turned aside.
Callinan matched his counterpart at the other end three minutes later, stopping a point blank effort by Casey. The junior goaltender was on the spot again five minutes later, this time sending Robert Gomez's shot to the side.
The Golden Eagles (1-1) finally got the ball past Callinan in the 77th minute when Stasiewicz raced past his defender on a ball from Chris Hall and tucked his shot inside the far left post.
The Mustangs pressured for the final 13 minutes of the game but could not find the late equalizer, despite outshooting the visitors, 18-10. Stevenson had one last chance in the dying seconds, but Taylor's diving header was wide of the mark.
Stevenson now hits the road for three-straight games, taking on Penn State Berks on Tuesday, September 2 at 7:00 p.m.
