Box Score 2 STEVENSON, Md. – Sophomore Alec Romanowski earned his team-leading fifth win on the mound for the Stevenson baseball team in a doubleheader split against Commonwealth opponent Messiah College, as the Mustangs took game one 8-2 before losing game two, 11-5.
Stevenson (12-21, 7-11 MAC) collected 12 hits in game one, jumping out to a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Troy Miller opened scoring with a two-run double and was followed by four consecutive Mustang singles. Senior Scott Merkel, freshman Kevin Kopas, and sophomore Nick Peifer collected RBIs in the inning. Junior Brett Schilling added a late run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single through the right side.
On the mound, Romanowski was strong through seven innings in his third complete game of the year, improving to 5-3 after allowing two earned runs on six hits and no walks.
Miller and Kopas paced the Mustangs' offense in game one, going a combined 3-for-7 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Merkel and Schilling both had two hits and an RBI apiece.
In game two, Messiah (14-13, 11-7 MAC) was first to score on Joseph Saufley's RBI double to right center, scoring Zach Brubaker from first base. Stevenson senior Greg Myers had a short two-inning start after earning the win against the Falcons on Thursday, responsible for one run.
The Mustangs put up five runs in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Ian Eberly and Miller's third RBI of the day on a single center field. Senior Ben Hallam then delivered a three-run homer to center field, his second of the year, giving Stevenson a 5-1 advantage.
The Falcons answered the next inning with four runs of their own, all on a two-out grand slam from Jon Heisey. Messiah went on to score six more runs in the final three innings, providing the final 11-5 margin and handing senior Brooks Miller his third loss of the season. The Mustangs were held hitless after the fourth inning, managing only one hit over 4.1 innings of relief from John Griffits who improved to 4-0 on the year.
Stevenson returns to action on Tuesday in a single nonconference contest with Catholic University at Santander Stadium in York, Pa. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
