Box Score GRANTHAM, Pa. – Behind a complete game shutout performance from senior Greg Myers, the Stevenson baseball team took the series opener from Commonwealth opponent Messiah College on Thursday, 4-0.
The Mustangs scored the once in the top of the first inning when senior Scott Merkel grounded into a double play, allowing sophomore Matt Myers to score. Merkel added another run in the top of the sixth with an RBI single up the middle.
That first run would be all that Stevenson (11-18, 6-10 MAC) needed, as the Falcons were held to six hits in the game, all singles, and could not score a run against Myers in his best outing of the season. Needing 136 pitches to earn the conference win, Myers struck out a season-best 12 batters while walking three to improve his record to 4-3. David Sletta was the only hitter for Messiah (11-18, 6-10 MAC) with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-3.
Myers, the team's leading pitcher in ERA (1.52), WHIP (1.09), BAA (.186), and K/9 (8.8), tallied his fourth complete game of the season while earning his first shutout since his victory in the conference tournament last season. In that game, he shut out the Widener Pride over nine innings and allowed just two hits as he struck out eight and the Mustangs went on to win 1-0.
Late in the game, Stevenson was able to add two late insurance runs to seal the victory when Matt Myers scored on a wild pitch and senior Tom Goulian drove in a run on a ground out to third base.
Matt Myers and sophomore Kevin Wu went a combined 4-for-8 with three runs scored in the win.
The Mustangs return home for a nonconference doubleheader on Saturday against Keystone College starting at noon, while their series with Messiah concludes on Monday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
