Mustangs Claim Conference Series Against Arcadia With Doubleheader Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

STEVENSON, Md. – After being eliminated by Arcadia in the 2013 conference tournament following back to back losses, the Stevenson baseball team split their doubleheader on Saturday with the visiting Knights, winning game one 6-4 while dropping game two 7-1.

Senior Greg Myers improved his record to 3-3 on the season after limiting the Knights to two earned runs on five hits in a seven-inning complete game effort. Myers now owns a team best 1.83 ERA after earning the win in game one and recording a save in the series opener yesterday.

Stevenson (10-15, 5-10 MAC) scored four early runs in the bottom of the first on a pair of fielding errors by the Knights infield. Arcadia (4-20-1, 3-12) was hitless through three innings until threatening to take the lead in the top of the fourth by scoring three runs on three hits and two Mustang errors.

Sophomore Matt Myers hit an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring senior Tom Goulian to give Stevenson a 5-3 advantage. Goulian would later add a run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Myers was able to work around another pair of errors and an unearned run in the top of the seventh by striking out two, bringing his total to seven in the win.

The Mustangs offense was lead by sophomore Kevin Wu and Myers, who went a combined 3-for-7 with two RBIs in game one.

Game two belonged to the Knights after scoring three runs in the fifth inning and four runs in the seventh. Junior Brandon Franke took his second loss of the year on the mound after surrendering three earned runs over five innings of work. Myers collected the Mustangs' lone RBI on an infield hit to score junior Fred Casper. Casper was 1-for-3 with a double in game two.

Senior Scott Merkel recorded a hit in both games and has had at least one hit in the team's last six games.

Stevenson returns to action Sunday at Park Field to face Neumann University in a nonconference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
