Box Score PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Stevenson baseball team snapped a five-game losing streak by defeating Arcadia University in a close 5-3 game on Friday at Erny Field as sophomore Alec Romanowski earned his team-leading fourth win while senior Ben Hallam homered in the crucial Commonwealth victory.
The Mustangs scored early in the top of the first when senior Scott Merkel delivered an RBI single to right field. A fielding error by the Knights' center fielder allowed another run to score the next inning, giving Stevenson (9-14, 4-9) a 2-1 advantage.
Hallam led off the fifth inning with a solo home run to center field, his first of the year, pushing the lead to 3-1. However, Arcadia (3-19-1, 2-11) tied the game at three a piece with RBI hits from Tom Wagner and Andonis Yiantsos.
Senior Tom Goulian drove in the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring sophomore Nick Peifer in the top of the eighth. The Knights surrendered another run on an errant pickoff attempt, allowing junior Frederick Casper to cross the plate.
The Mustangs called on their two top pitchers in a must-win scenario, with Romanowski tossing 7.2 innings and striking out a season high 9 batters without allowing an earned run. Senior Greg Myers made his first career relief appearance, pitching the final 1.1 innings, striking out two batters and earning his first career save.
Stevenson continues their series with Arcadia on Saturday at Park Field with a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
