Long Ball Highlights Mustangs' Season-Opening Sweep of PSU Harrisburg

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

STEVENSON, Md. - Stevenson baseball sophomore Kevin Wu was 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs in game one while senior Scott Merkel was 1-for-2 with a grand slam in game two as the Mustangs swept their season-opening doubleheader with Penn State Harrisburg Sunday at Park Field, 10-2 and 4-1.

Stevenson (2-0) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first after Wu homered the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for a two-run homer.

The Mustangs extended their lead to eight with a six-run second following RBI singles from sophomores Ian Eberly and Nick Peifer, bases loaded walks from both Wu and senior Ben Hallam and a sacrifice fly from Merkel. The team added its final run on a defensive error by the Nittany Lions.

Hallam and junior Bret Schilling contributed RBI singles in the third and fourth inning, respectively.

Penn State Harrisburg (1-3) scored a run each in the fifth and sixth innings off a sacrifice fly from Travis Crammer and an RBI-single from John Cataldo.

On the mound, senior Greg Myers picked up his 11th win in 13 starts for the Mustangs since last season, striking out four over 5.0 innings of work while giving up just one earned run.

Sophomores Arik Fenstermacher and Reid Foxwell made their debuts as Mustangs by appearing in relief in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively.

In game two, the Mustangs scored all the runs they would need in the bottom of the first. After loaded the bases with three-straight walks, Merkel belted a line-drive grand slam over the left field fence to put Stevenson in front, 4-0. The blast was Merkel's first career home run.

Junior Frederick Casper made his first career start, finishing the day 1-for-2 at the plate while sophomore Alec Romanowski picked up his first win of the season after scattering five hits over 5.0 innings and allowing just one earned run.

The game was called after the top of the fifth due to rain and field conditions.

Stevenson's next game is scheduled for Tuesday when it hosts Gettysburg for a nine-inning, non-conference contest at Park Field beginning at 3:00 p.m.
