Box Score READING, Pa. – Despite a strong offensive showing from the Stevenson baseball team, with seven of nine starters recording at least one hit, the Mustangs dropped the series finale against the defending Commonwealth champs Alvernia on Tuesday, 10-7. The loss would be the latest in what is now a four-game losing streak for the Mustangs.
Stevenson jumped to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first with an RBI single from senior Ben Hallam, but the lead would be short lived as the Crusaders sent two runners home in both the second and third innings, bringing the score to 4-1.
The Mustangs erupted for six runs in the top of the fourth, gaining the lead for the second time of the game. After a lead-off double from Hallam, RBI singles from sophomore Davis Grove and junior Bret Schilling would chase Alvernia starter Aaron Benusis from the game after only three innings of work. A defensive error from the Crusaders resulted in another run crossing the plate for the Mustangs, with an RBI single from sophomore Kevin Wu and a sacrifice fly from junior Troy Miller adding two more.
Alvernia (9-2) responded with five runs in the bottom half of the fourth, taking the lead for the last time, and adding another run in the sixth.
Stevenson (4-4) senior Brooks Miller suffered the loss on the mound in his first decision of the season, battling for four innings and giving up eight earned runs. Sophomores Trevor Fitzsimmons and Tom Connell combined for the final four innings. Connell's appearance was his first of the 2014 campaign.
The Mustangs totalled ten hits on the day, led by Hallam with three and Wu with two, each tacking on an RBI and a run scored.
