The Mustangs (4-3) opened the day facing Mike Weinhold in game one, the fifth overall prospect in Division III who was also selected as a pre-season All-American by d3baseball.com. He scattered three hits and allowed only one earned run over seven innings.
The Crusaders (8-2) were projected to finish first in the conference heading into the 2014 season while Stevenson was projected to finish second.
Senior Greg Myers pitched in game one for Stevenson, eclipsing five innings and surrendering one earned run while striking out four. The Mustangs defense was plagued with defensive woes, committing six errors in the field.
The offense responded at the plate in the sixth inning when junior Troy Miller doubled to left field to score pinch hitter Keith Pappas. Miller provided the only runs Stevenson would find in game one.
In game two, Alec Romanowski continued his strong sophomore campaign with 5.2 innings on the mound, giving up just two earned runs.
Down 6-0 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Mustangs rallied to cut Arcadia's lead in half with consecutive RBI singles from junior Bret Schilling, Eberly, and Goulian.
Alvernia then called on 2013 Commonwealth Pitcher of the Year Kevin Becker-Menditto, who picked off Goulian at second base to end Stevenson's rally and save the game.
Senior Tom Goulian and sophomore Ian Eberly paced the Mustangs' offense on the day, each with an RBI while going a combined 5-for-12.
