Myers, Merkel Lead Mustangs to First Road Win With 13-0 Shutout at Wesley

Box Score

DOVER, Del. - Behind a stellar pitching performance by senior Greg Myers, the Stevenson baseball team lit up the scoreboard in the fifth inning at Wesley, scoring eight runs with nine men reaching base total on its way to a 13-0 shutout Monday.

With three games canceled due to weather issues since their home opener on March 2, the Mustangs (3-0) took the field in Dover for their first road game of the 2014 season.

Through four innings, neither team saw a runner cross the plate as Myers gave up just two hits while Wesley starter Sagar Patel gave up two hits and issued two walks in that span.

Sophomore Davis Grove got the offense started in the fifth with a single through the left side followed by a single by sophomore Nick Peifer. Both Grove and Peifer would soon score as senior Bret Schilling sent a 3-1 pitch down the right field line for a single, knocking in both runs.

Peifer reached base four times on the day in five plate appearances, including two hits and two walks.

With the bases loaded six batters later, senior Scott Merkel sent an 0-2 offering to deep left field, scoring all three while upping Stevenson's lead to 7-0. He would score moments later on an RBI single by Grove, as the Mustangs managed to bat around and send 15 total batters to the plate, while in turn knocking Patel out of the game for the Wolverines after just 4.2 innings pitched.

The charge continued in the sixth when senior Tom Goulian and sophomore Kevin Wu both walked to open up the inning, followed by a single for junior Troy Miller. Merkel came up up with the bases loaded for the second straight inning and slapped a two-RBI single out to center, scoring both Goulian and Wu while giving Stevenson a double digit lead at 10-0.

Grove followed with a two-RBI single of his own, scoring both Miller and Merkel and pushing the Mustangs lead up to 12-0.

Miller added the final run of the game in the seventh, singling to left field to score Wu, who had reached on a double to center.

After two men reached base in the first for Wesley (3-5), the team never managed more than one baserunner in an inning over the remaining eight frames.

Myers navigated through seven innings for Stevenson (3-0), allowing only four hits, one walk, and two hit batters while striking out five. His ERA through two starts sits at 0.75 (12 IP, 1 ER) while his WHIP rests at 0.83 (12 IP, 7 H, 3 BB).

Senior Brooks Miller made his 2014 debut on the mound in relief of Myers, tossing two scoreless innings while giving up one hit and striking out one. Miller induced five ground ball outs on all five balls put in play against him.

The Mustangs take the field tomorrow night at Roanoke with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
