Box Score REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Highlighted by a power play goal from Shannon Smith and a penalty shot by Gabby Crugnale, the University of New England rallied from a two-goal deficit with three second period tallies en route to a 4-2 victory over the Stevenson women's ice hockey team Saturday at Reisterstown Sportsplex.
The loss snaps a two-game win streak for the Mustangs (8-15-1) and is their third consecutive at home after the team started the season 3-0-1.
Despite holding a 32-25 advantage in shots, Stevenson committed nine penalties for 18 minutes and was 0-for-6 on the power play.
Sophomore Megan Donahue scored both goals for the Mustangs to give them a 2-0 lead. Today marked her second multi-goal game this season and she has totaled five points over the team's last seven games. Stevenson is 3-2 when she scores a goal.
After Donahue's second goal at 9:01 of the second period, the Nor'easters (7-11-4) got on the board just 2:24 later when Mary Wirth scored to cut their deficit in half.
Less than four minutes later, UNE would tie the game when Shannon Smith scored on a 5-on-3 power play opporunity at 14:50. The Nor'easters were 1-for-6 with the man-advantage and are now just 8-for-100 this season.
UNE took the lead for good when Gabby Crugnale scored here eighth goal of the season on a penalty shot after she was hooked from behind on a breakaway with 1:45 remaining in the second. The goal was the last of three in a span of just 6:50 that gave the Nor'easters a 3-2 lead after two.
Jenni Poulin capped the scoring for UNE just 2:21 into the final period when scored her team-leading 11th goal of the year unassisted after a turnover in the Mustangs' zone.
Sydney Helmbrech totaled 30 saves for the Nor'easters who won for just the second time in nine road games this season. Sophomore Anastassia Nelson finished with 21 stops for Stevenson, including 11 in the second period as the Mustangs were outshot, 14-11.
Sophomores Sydney Hughes and Jessie Capanelli each added assists for Stevenson. Sophomore Rachel Martell totaled three block shots for the Mustangs and leads the team with 49 this season, one ahead of Hughes.
Stevenson concludes its second season on Sunday when it wraps-up its two-game series with UNE at Reisterstown Sportsplex. Face-off is at 11:30 a.m.
