Box Score 2 REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson women's ice hockey junior Madison Lange scored her career-high fourth goal of the season just 48 seconds into the second period to tie the game at 1-1, but Hamline added two second-period markers just 43 seconds apart en route to a 4-2 victory Saturday at Reisterstown Sportsplex.
The Mustangs (7-4) have dropped back-to-back games for the first time this season and are still one win shy of tying the single-season school record.
The Pipers' Jaimee Nowicki opened the scoring at the 12:05 mark of the first period as Hamline outshot Stevenson 10-8 and led 1-0 at the first intermission.
However, Lange quickly answered with the game-tying goal less than a minute into the second period after the Mustangs forced a turnover in Hamline's defensive end. The goal was Lange's fourth of the season, equaling her total from a year ago.
The game remained tied at 1-1 until a furious 57-second stretch midway through the period when both teams combined for three goals, including two by the Pipers who went back in front by one.
Kelsey Rafferty started the melee at 12:48 before she picked up the secondary assist on a goal by Megan Lawry at 13:31 to put Hamline in front, 3-1.
After falling 7-1 on Saturday, the Mustangs quickly answered to pull within one just 14 seconds later after junior Katie Abbott scored for the second-straight day off assists from freshman Monica Pozuc and junior Erin McLoughlin. Abbott now has points in six of the last seven games, including goals in five of those contests.
Stevenson doubled up the Pipers in shots in the second period 14-7 after being outshot 39-23 in the previous four.
The Mustangs missed an opportunity to tie the game 39 seconds later when Nina Chase was whistled for an interference penalty at 14:24 resulting in the team's third power play of the day and second of the period.
After entering the weekend with the nation's seventh-best power play at 26.7 percent, Stevenson went 0-for-6 against Hamline, including 0-for-5 on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Pipers owned the 49th-best penalty kill, allowing goals on 21-of-28 attempts.
The Mustangs had two more power play opportunities in the third, but could not get the equalizer before Lawry added her second goal of the game, an insurance tally with 2:01 remaining.
Stevenson managed to win 32-of-56 faceoffs, led by freshman Chelsea Blackburn who went 9-2. Junior Anastassia Nelson finished with 24 saves, including 10 in the third period.
Lowry had two goals for Hamline (2-6-1) while Rafferty had a goal and an assist. Katie Beckman made 29 saves.
Stevenson begins a 10-day, four-game road trip on Friday, January 2 when it takes on Chatham at the Codfish Bowl hosted by UMass Boston. The Mustangs defeated the Cougars 5-0 at home back on November 8.
