Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Led by six saves by Most Valuable Player Tiffany McKee and two stops in the shootout, the top-seeded Stevenson women's soccer team edged the second-seeded and No.1-ranked Messiah 4-2 on penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie in regulation and two scoreless overtime periods to claim the Commonwealth Conference Championship Saturday evening at Mustang Stadium.
The Mustangs (10-5-5) extend their unbeaten streak to nine while earning the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship for the fourth time in program history and first since 2010.
The loss for the Falcons (19-0-2) snaps their streak of streak of seven-straight titles. Messiah has won 13 of the last 15 titles.
Messiah leading scorer and Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year, Nikki Elsaesser got space early in the contest at the top of the box but McKee came up with the save to keep the 11th-ranked scoring offense off the board.
The two teams traded scoring opportunities as a corner kick by junior Allie Ondrejcak nearly found the head of senior Kaylie Yapps on the back post. Down the other end, the Falcons were awarded a free kick but Marisa Weavers shot hit the post and went wide.
With time winding down in the first half, freshman Shannon Ogrysko had a long throw in which junior Ashlyn Hawbaker flicked out and freshman Lauren Spivey touched before bouncing in front of freshman Kellen Wittman who put it in the back of the net. Wittman leads the team with nine goals and 22 points.
In the 55th minute, the Falcons tied the game at one on almost the exact play Stevenson scored in the first half. A long throw in sent into the box found the feet of Elsaesser who sent it across to a wide-open Mackenzie Clapper for her third goal of the year.
Messiah nearly went ahead in the 78th minute but Ogrysko came in at the last minute to block a shot right in front of the goal by Missy Biener.
In the overtime periods, Stevenson outshot the Mustangs 3-1, including the final two shots in the final four minutes.
McKee stopped the first and third shots of the shootout while the Mustangs connected on all four with makes by junior Emily Losquadro, senior Meaghan Williams, sophomore Jordan Porretto and freshman Brittney Celano.
Tied 2-2 in the shootout, Porretto's shot hit the crossbar and went high but was awarded another shot after Audra Larson came off her line.
The Falcons outshot Stevenson 15-6, including 8-1 in the second period while the Mustangs held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Mustangs, who tied with Messiah 1-1 earlier in the season, is just the fourth team to score against the top-ranked Falcons who have allowed just five goals this season.
