Men's Soccer Closes Out Regular Season with 2-0 Loss at Lebanon Valley

Box Score

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Stevenson junior goal keeper Ryan Callinan recorded a career-high 12 saves, but it was not enough as the Mustangs were shutout in their regular season finale at Lebanon Valley, 2-0, Saturday afternoon at Herbert Field.

Callinan's 12 saves break his previous best of 11 which he recorded earlier this year on Sept. 11 in a 4-3 overtime win for Stevenson (10-8-2, 1-5-2 CC) at Lancaster Bible.  Lebanon Valley (7-8-3, 3-3-2 CC) keeper Cam Avery was equal to the task, making ten saves to record the clean sheet.

The action picked up quickly with the hosts forcing Callinan into a save just 94 seconds into the match on a shot by Jake Herron.  Lebanon Valley earned back-to-back corner kicks two minutes later, but Callinan and the Mustangs' defense kept the Dutchmen out.

The stand turned the tide as Stevenson began to get the better of the play when sophomore Adnan Alic and senior Yianni Sarioglou looked to break the early deadlock with shots, but both were turned away by Avery.  The Mustangs continue to press, but could not convert a pair of corner kicks by Sarioglou in the 14th minute.

Lebanon Valley capitalized on the wasted chances and took a 1-0 lead three minutes later as Brian Lowe finished a two vs. one situation, combining with teammate Austin Freeman for his first goal of the season.  The hosts were held at bay for the remainder of the half, however, as Callinan made two more saves to keep the Mustangs within reach going into the interval.

The Dutchmen continued the pressure in the opening stages of the second half, but Callinan was up to the task yet again in the 52nd minute, making a save on a headed effort by the goal scorer Lowe.

Stevenson pushed back just past the hour mark as junior Calvin Granger flashed a shot wide and the Mustangs earned another corner.  A minute later at the other end of the field Callinan made stop for the visitors and then was answered as Avery saved a shot from Mustang freshman Scott Dorman.

The end-to-end action was unrelenting as each keeper made a save two minutes apart in the 72nd and 74th minutes.  Barely over two minutes later, though Lebanon Valley converted its next chance as Curtis Washburn slotted in his first of the season on an assist from John McHale for a 2-0 home lead.

Barely 30 seconds later Granger looked to peg one back for the Mustangs, but again he was denied Avery.  Stevenson looked to be close to pulling one back in the late stages with Avery stopping a shot by freshman Andrew Catalana in the 82nd and then junior Reid Hawkins smashed a shot off the crossbar three minutes later.

Callinan kept the visitors in the game, recording two more saves in the dying moments, but Avery maintained his clean sheet by saving another shot by Catalana in the final minute of the game.

Stevenson will now wait to hear the selections for the 2014 ECAC Division III Men's Soccer tournament which will take place on Monday, Nov. 10.
