Martin Brings Stevenson Level, But Mustangs Fall 2-1 to Alvernia on Senior Night

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Junior Zachary Martin cancelled out an early goal by Alvernia's Josh Wollaston midway through the second half, but Wollaston struck for his brace in the 74th minute as the visiting Crusaders defeated the Stevenson men's soccer team, 2-1, Saturday evening on Senior Night at Mustang Stadium.

The loss snaps a two game unbeaten streak for Stevenson (10-6-2, 1-3-2 MAC) and is the third straight to Alvernia (9-6-2, 3-2-1 MAC) since the Mustangs joined the MAC for the 2012 season.  The win helps the Crusaders maintain a hold on a spot in the conference playoffs while the Mustangs will need to win out and get some help.

Game play opened slowly with Alvernia taking the opening chance as Rocky Elgogari broke free from the Mustang defense in the third minute, but fired his shot high and wide.

At the quarter of the hour mark the visitors grabbed the initiative, possessing the ball deep in Stevenson territory.  After firing a free kick just wide, Josh Wollaston got the Crusaders on the board by taking a give-and-go across the top of the box and then lashing a shot across his body and into the side netting.

Alvernia continued to press, but Mustang junior goalie Ryan Callinan kept the Crusaders from doubling their tally with a fine save in the 28th minute off of a low slotted effort from Wollaston.  Callinan made three saves for SU in the opening period.

Out of the break Stevenson grabbed possession, controlling the ball in the offensive half, but could not create a concrete opportunity.

Just past the hour-mark the Mustangs looked to get on the board as sophomore Adnan Alic swung a ball deep into the Alvernia box, but Crusader keeper Zach Rider collected the ball in the air after a contested header.

Two minutes later, however, Stevenson pulled level through Martin.  With the ball in the right channel, junior Calvin Granger squared the ball into the middle of the box where Martin one-timed a rocket past the diving Rider to bring the Mustangs back on terms.

On 69 minutes senior Yianni Sarioglou drove down the left side, got a step on his defender and whipped a shot towards the far corner, but it slammed off the post.  Sophomore Alex Vitzthum gathered the rebound but sent his shot wide of the target.

Just four minutes later though, and against the run of play, Wollaston struck again for Alvernia.  After a 50-50 ball bounced out to the left, the Crusader midfielder settled the ball before shooting low under the outstretched Callinan.

Both teams took chances over the next ten minutes with the host gaining the best chance with just over seven minutes left.  After a handball just outside of the box, Sarioglou stepped up to take the free kick, but curled his effort just high of the crossbar.

The Mustangs continued to push in the final stages, but could not find the equalizer.

Stevenson now hits the road for its final two games of the season, taking on Lycoming on Tuesday, October 28 before wrapping up the regular season on Saturday, November 1 at Lebanon Valley.
