Box Score READING, Pa. - Senior Alison Kagel scored her ninth-career game-winning goal 3:37 into overtime as the Stevenson field hockey team posted its third-straight victory with a 3-2 win over Alvernia Saturday afternoon at Schlager Memorial Field.
With the win, the Mustangs (10-6, 2-2 MAC) improve to 4-0 in overtime games on the year while also tying the school record with 10 wins matching the 2008 and 2013 teams.
Senior Caitlin Dempsey gave Stevenson the early 1-0 advantage with her 17th goal of the season on an assist from classmate Meg Gill. Dempsey found the back of the net on a deflection that sailed over top of the goalie. It was the fifth assist for Gill this season who came into the year with just one.
With the goal, Dempsey now has recorded 105 total points, surpassing the record set by Dawn McFarland '04. The school's career goal and points scorer is just three assists shy of tying that record.
The Crusaders (8-7, ) were able to tie the game at one with 1:36 remaining before the half as Melanie Lowry scored her first of the season off a penalty corner from Summer Liberto.
Kagel put the Mustangs ahead for the second time on the day after a rebound following a shot from Dempsey in front. Alvernia tied the game once again just over ten minutes later as Margaret Wentzel scored her team leading 16th goal of the year.
On her fifth shot of the day, Kagel followed up on her own rebound attempt after an initial save by Erin Wunsch for her third game-winner of the season.
Alvernia outshot the Mustangs 14-11, including 7-3 in the first half. The Crusaders also held a 12-8 advantage in penalty corners.
Wunch finished with three saves while sophomore Gabriella Brooks totaled eight.
Stevenson returns to action on Wednesday, October 22 when the Mustangs travel to No. 14 Lebanon Valley for a Commonwealth Conference contest beginning at 4:30 p.m.
