Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson field hockey senior Caitlin Dempsey scored her team-leading 14th goal of the season with 1:48 remaining in the second overtime to lift the Mustangs to a 3-2 Commonwealth Conference victory over Widener Saturday night at Mustang Stadium.
Stevenson (8-6, 1-2 MAC) is now 3-0 in overtime games this season, all of which have come at home. The team is also 4-2 in one goal games. The last double overtime game for Stevenson came back on Oct. 14, 2009 when the team defeated Goucher in penalty strokes, 2-1.
For Dempsey, it was her fifth game-winning goal this season and the 11th of her career. With 14 goals, she moved into fourth-place on the school's single-season list, tying her with Holly Chattin (2000). Kaitlyn May (2011) and Dawn McFarland (2003) are tied for second with 15 while Dempsey holds the record after scoring 18 goals a year ago.
Dempsey also moved into third on the school's point list with 34, trailing McFarland (35) and her mark of 44 set in 2013.
Dempsey raised her career goal total to 39, two shy of McFarland's career record. With 96 points, Dempsey trails McFarland's record by eight.
The Mustangs led 2-0 just over 12 minutes into the game after two penalty stroke goals by sophomore Rosemarie Neiva. She now has six goals this season and is 3-for-4 on penalty stroke attempts.
Stevenson held its two-goal advantage until there was 12 minutes remaining in the second half when Brittany Lavin scored her team-leading seventh of the year.
The Pride (4-8, 1-2 MAC) would then tie the game with just 29 seconds remaining in regulation as Eliza Newlin found the back of the net for the second time this season off an assist from Meghan McLaughlin.
Widener scored both second-half goals after outshooting the Mustangs, 10-5.
After end-to-end action in both overtimes, Stevenson finally broke through with just 1:48 remaining in the second as Dempsey gained control of the ball and dribbled around the defense before blasting a shot from the top of the circle past Maggie Karmeris.
Karmeris finished with eight saves, three of which came in overtime, while sophomore Gabriella Brooks had nine for Stevenson, including six in the second half.
The Mustangs wrap-up their three-game homestand next Thursday, October 16 when they host a non-conference contest versus Wilson beginning at 7:00 p.m.
