Box Score REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Michele Meggiolaro's short-handed goal with just 20 seconds remaining in the first period proved to be the only goal Manhattanville needed as Dana DeMartino made 23 saves to lead the Valiants to a 4-0 victory over the Stevenson women's ice hockey team Tuesday at Reisterstown Sportsplex.
The loss was the first in five home games this season for the Mustangs (3-10-1) who were shutout for the first time since a 3-0 defeat at No. 3 Elmira on Feb. 2, 2013.
Meggiolaro's short-handed tally was her sixth goal of the season and came after a flurry of activity in front of sophomore Mackenzie Bruch who turned away two stuff attempts in front before Meggiolaro scored on an assist from Scotia Bellavance. It was the second short-handed goal allowed by Stevenson this year.
The goal stood as the game's lone tally until the first minute of the third period when Alla Traun struck on the power play off assists from Trenah Stauffer and Rachael Morrison at 57 seconds. It marked the ninth-straight game in which the Mustangs have allowed a power play goal as the opposition has totaled 14 goals on 66 opportunities during that time.
Manhattanville (6-5-1), who was ranked as high as ninth in the USCHO.com poll earlier this season, finished 1-for-5 on the power play and would add two more goals in the final 10 minutes as the Valiants outscored Stevenson 3-0 in the period.
Morrison had a goal and an assist for the visitors while DeMartino earned her first career shuout and Meggiolaro netted her first career game-winner.
Bruch totaled 21 saves for the Mustangs who were outshot 25-23 and committed seven penalties for a total of 14 minutes.
Stevenson returns to action on Friday when it travels to New England College for a two-game series with the Pilgrims beginning at 4:00 p.m. NEC went 1-0-1 against the Mustangs a year ago, winning 2-0 at Reisterstown Sportsplex on Jan. 10, 2013 before the two teams battled to a 2-2 tie on January 11.
