Box Score 2 BALTIMORE, Md. - Highlighted by All-Tournament Team selections, senior Jessica Gieselman (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and junior Samantha Perillo (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends), the Stevenson women's volleyball team posted two more victories Saturday to capture the championship at the Greg Giovanazzi Memorial Tournament hosted by Johns Hopkins.
The Mustangs (9-0), who have started a season with nine-straight wins for the second time in the last six years, defeated N.C. Wesleyan 25-16, 25-16, 25-11 before knocking off the host Blue Jays in the title game, 25-10, 26-24, 25-16.
The best start to a season in school history is 15-0 set in 2008 when the team finished 32-8 and advanced to the semifinals of the ECAC Division III South Championship.
Gieselman and Perillo were also named to the Giovanazzi Memorial All-Tournament Team a year ago as Stevenson fell in five sets to Hopkins, 25-21, 16-25, 21-25, 25-19, 12-15. Since 2011, the Mustangs are 3-1 against their crosstown rivals and have won the last two.
For Gieselman, it was her fifth career all-tournament honor as she finished the two-day event with 12 kills, 117 assists, 21 digs and 10 block assists in 10 sets.
Meanwhile, Perillo earned her third career all-tournament selection after totaling 51 digs, nine service aces and seven assists. She also added one kill.
Against the Battling Bishops (0-6), freshman Kristen Brooks (Wilmington, Del./Concord) led the way with 10 kills, marking her second-straight game with at least 10 kills after she finished one short of her career-high set versus Gwynedd-Mercy on Friday.
Junior Megan Miller (Middletown, Del./St. Georges Tech) had nine kills and three total blocks while senior Christine Isenberg (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) totaled eight kills and seven digs. Gieselman finished with six kills, 38 assists, seven digs and two block assists. Perillo had 20 digs, her third game of the season with at least 20.
Miller spearheaded the effort against Johns Hopkins (3-4), posting 10 kills and five block assists while sophomore Imani Hudson (Burke, Va./Thomas Edison) added eight kills and three total blocks. As a team, the Mustangs had 19 total blocks, limiting the Blue Jays to a .125 hitting percentage.
Brooks had seven kills and three block assists while Gieselman totaled 31 assists, eight digs and five block assists.
Stevenson continues play in the Commonwealth Conference on Tuesday when it travels to Albright for a 7:00 p.m., contest with the Lions.
