Bratter, Goulian Drive in Four, Mustangs End Season With 7-5 Loss to Arcadia

Box Score

WEST LAWN, Pa. - Stevenson baseball senior Matt Bratter (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) and junior Tom Goulian (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) combined for four RBIs, but the Mustangs committed four errors resulting in four unearned runs as they were eliminated from the Commonwealth Conference Baseball Championship Friday night with a 7-5 loss to Arcadia at Owls Field.

Stevenson (25-18) finishes the season with the second-most wins in school history, tying the 2005 squad that went 25-20. The school record for wins in a season is 29 set in 2006.

The Knights scored two runs in the first as starting pitcher Michael Nessel helped his own cause with a lead-off single before eventually scoring two batters later. An RBI-single by Taylor Schon plated Elliott Freeman to give Arcadia a 2-0 lead.

Stevenson cut the lead to one in the bottom of the third when Goulian hit a two-out single to score senior Brad Blum (Olney, Md./Magruder).

Arcadia (23-18-1) sealed the win with a three-run fifth, scoring all three runs with no outs. A double steal scored Kyle Jackson to make it 4-1 before Nessel scored again on a RBI-double by David Jacobs extended the lead to four.

In their half of the fifth, the Mustangs pulled within three on an RBI-groundout by Goulian that scored sophomore Bret Schilling (Catonsville, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) before the two teams traded a pair of runs in the seventh to give the Knights a 7-4 advantage.

In five games against Arcadia this season, Schilling and Goulian combined to hit .400, going 16-for-40 with nine RBIs and four runs scored. Goulian had a team-high nine hits and five RBIs.

Senior Tim Pyle (Silver Spring, Md./Covenant Life) made his 42nd career appearance, pitching a scoreless eighth and ninth in relief of freshman Alec Romanowski (Endwell, N.Y./Endwell) who allowed seven runs on nine hits. Only three runs were earned.

Stevenson tried to force extra innings with a two-out rally in the ninth that began with a single by senior Josh Morris (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore Troy Miller (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) doubled to left to score Miller, but was thrown out at third on a relay to end the game.

The 2013 senior class finishes as the sixth winningest class in program history with 77 wins to go along three conference championship appearances.
