GLENSIDE, Pa. - Stevenson baseball junior Tom Goulian (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) extended his hitting streak to a season-long 12 games while junior Greg Myers (Baltimore, Md./Parkville) picked up his team-leading seventh win of the season as the Mustangs split a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader with Arcadia Saturday at Erny Field.
Stevenson (21-11, 10-5 MAC) are now in a tie for second place in the conference standings with Arcadia, but the Mustangs own the tiebreaker with the Knights after winning two of three in the series this weekend.
Goulian went 3-for-8 on the day, including 2-for-4 with a run in Stevenson's 4-1 victory in the opener. His previous career-long for consecutive games with a hit was eight which he set as a freshman in 2011 from February 27 to March 7.
Junior Ben Hallam (Glen Burnie, Md./Old Mill) also had two hits in game one, including an RBI-single as part of the Mustangs three-run fourth. Hallam's single scored sophomore Troy Miller (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) for the team's first run of the game before sophomore Bret Schilling (Catonsville, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) followed with a two-run double to give Stevenson a 3-0 lead.
That proved to be all the run support Myers would need as he allowed just five hits and one earned run over 7.0 innings while striking out a career-high eight batters. It is the fourth time this season and third-straight start that Myers has struck out eight.
Myers is now 7-2 in nine starts with a 2.75 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 59.0 innings this season.
In game two, junior Brooks Miller (Odenton, Md./Arundel) was denied his team-leading seventh win of the season as the Mustangs' were just 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position while leaving seven on base.
Miller scattered eight hits over 6.2 innings, but with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, George Pagan drove the first pitch from Miller up the middle to score Taylor Schon and give Arcadia a 4-3 walk-off win after the Mustangs won on a walk-off by senior Josh Morris (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) on Friday.
Schon was 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs for Arcadia (18-11-1, 10-5 MAC) while Justin Simpson earned the win after allowing three hits and one earned run in 2.0 innings of relief.
Troy Miller went 3-for-4 with an RBI-triple with two outs in the top of the seventh that scored Morris to tie the game at 3-3 and force the Knights to bat in the bottom of the inning.
Morris was 1-for-4 with a run scored while junior Brian Poppleton (Elmira, N.Y./Elmira Free Academy) went 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI-double in the fourth to give Stevenson a 2-1 lead.
The Mustangs host a nine-inning Commonwealth Conference contest versus defending champion Messiah next Friday, April 19. First pitch from Park Field is at 3:30 p.m.
