Mustangs Extend Conference Winning Streak to Eight, Walk-Off in 10th

Box Score

STEVENSON, Md. - Trailing by one run in the bottom of the 10th, the Stevenson baseball team tied the game on an RBI-fielder's choice by junior Tom Goulian (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) before winning on a walk-off single by senior Josh Morris (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) as the Mustangs rallied to beat Arcadia 8-7 at Park Field.

With the win, Stevenson (20-10, 9-4 MAC) extended its Commonwealth Conference winning streak to eight while posting its second consecutive 20-win season. The last time the Mustangs had back-to-back 20-win seasons was 2008 when the team went 22-21-1, capping four-straight seasons with 20 wins.

Stevenson also moved into a tie for second-place in the conference standings with the Knights (17-10-1, 9-4 MAC) as both teams are just a half-game behind Alvernia.

The Mustangs led 5-3 in the top of the ninth before the Knights scored three runs to take their first lead of the game at 6-5. Morris led off the bottom of the inning with a single to left before being sacrificed into scoring position on a bunt by sophomore Troy Miller (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock).

With two outs, Morris was advanced to third following a balk by Arcadia's Jason Goldberg before scoring on the next at-bat when senior Matt Bratter (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) laced a line drive to left on a 3-2 count to tie the game at 6-6.

In the top of the 10th, Arcadia regained the lead on a sacrifice fly by George Pagan. After a pitching change in the bottom of the inning, senior Heath Johnson (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) reached on a throwing error by the Knights before moving to third on a single by sophomore Bret Schilling (Catonsville, Md./Mount Saint Joseph).

After a walk by senior Brad Blum (Olney, Md./Magruder) loaded the bases, Johnson scored on a fielder's choice by Goulian to tie the game at 7-7 before Morris drove in sophomore pinch runner Mike Vitcavich (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) to give the Mustangs their 14th win in 18 home games this season.

Morris was 3-for-5 with one RBI while Goulian went 2-for-6 with three RBIs and extended his hitting streak to a season-best 10 games. Johnson was 2-for-4 with four runs scored.

Freshman Trevor Fitzsimmons (Toms River, N.J./Toms River) earned his first career win in relief, allowing just one earned run and three hits over 1.2 innings. Freshman Alec Romanowski (Endwell, N.Y./Maine Endwell) nearly went the distance, scattering 10 hits over 8.1 innings while striking out four in the no decision.

Jerry Smith went 4-4 with two RBIs for the Knights while Simpson was 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Johan van Bemmelen suffered his second loss in 12 appearances this season, allowing two runs on two hits in a third of an inning.

Stevenson and Acadia conclude their three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday at Erny Field beginning at noon.
