Box Score STEVENSON, Md. - The Stevenson baseball team jumped out to a 3-0 lead through three, but a grand slam by Jimmy King keyed a York (Pa.) comeback that saw the Spartans score nine runs over the final five innings, including four in the top of the ninth, as they posted a 9-5 victory Wednesday at Park Field.
The loss snapped a four-game home winning streak for the Mustangs (19-10) who lost for just the fourth time in 17 home games this season.
Stevenson took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when senior Heath Johnson (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) scored on a throwing error by Spartan pitcher Josh Kohn.
The Mustangs added two more runs in the third on RBI singles by sophomore Troy Miller (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) and junior Scott Merkel (Hampstead, Md./Calvert Hall).
Tuesday's game featured two ties and three lead changes, the second of which came in the top of the fifth when York (15-13) loaded the bases with one out before taking the lead on King's first home run of the season that gave the Spartans a 4-3 advantage.
Stevenson immediately got the run back in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI-single to right by freshman Davis Grove (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) that scored senior Matt Bratter (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive).
The Spartans regained the lead on an RBI-single by Dustin Worthman in the top of the seventh before the Mustangs tied the game for the second time at 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth when Johnson scored his second unearned run of the game on a throwing error by York third baseman Justin Cohen.
However, the Spartans blew the game open with four runs in the top of the ninth, all coming on three consective at-bats with two outs. They scored the go-ahead run on an RBI-double by Worthman before adding two more on a two-run, pinch-hit homer by Austin Calaman.
York totaled five, two-out RBIs while hitting .417 (5-for-12) with runners in scoring position.
Despite not allowing a hit over 2.0 innings, junior Ryan Kellough (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) suffered his second loss of the season after allowing the go-ahead run on Worthman's RBI-double in the top of the ninth.
Meanwhile, Mike Sarecky needed just nine pitches to improve his record to 3-1 for the Spartans after relieving Matt Goodman with two outs in the bottom of the eighth. He faced just seven batters and allowed two hits over 1.1 innings.
Johnson and Miller each went 4-for-5 for Stevenson while Merkel was 3-for-5. The trio combined for 11 of the team's 15 hits as the Mustang' first six hitters in the lineup hit .500 with three RBIs as they went 14-for-28.
Stevenson hosts a nine-inning Commonwealth Conference contest with Arcadia on Friday at Park Field beginning at 3:30 p.m.
