Box Score HARRISBURG, Pa. - After falling behind 5-0, the Stevenson baseball team scored six runs in the top of the seventh to take a 6-5 lead, but the Mustangs couldn't hold on as Penn State Harrisburg responded with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to edge out an 8-6 non-conference victory Saturday.
The loss snapped a four-game win streak for Stevenson (16-8) who lost for just the second time in its last five road games.
For the Nittany Lions (8-9), the win salvaged a split in the season series after the Mustangs won 7-2 at Park Field back on February 27.
Penn State Harrisburg jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run double to left by Bryan Balshy. Balshy scored the team's third run of the game in the bottom of the third when he crossed the plate on a double by Clay Thrasher.
The Nittany Lions added two more runs in their half of the third on RBI-singles by John Cataldo and Travis Crammer.
Junior Ryan Kellough (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) was tagged for all five runs, four of which were earned as he allowed seven hits and two walks over the first three innings.
Despite the rough start, Kellough did not suffer the loss as the offense got him off the hook with a six-run seventh. Stevenson finally got on the board against Penn State Harrisburg starter Clint Hicks with a one-out, two-run single by senior Josh Morris (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) that scored senior Brad Blum (Olney, Md./Magruder).
Morris' hit was the first of back-to-back-to-back RBI-singles as Morris scored on an RBI-single by junior Scott Merkel (Hampstead, Md./Calvert Hall) before Merkel was brought home on an RBI-single by senior Matt Bratter (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive).
The Mustangs tied the game when junior Ben Hallam (Glen Burnie, Md./Old Mill) singled to score sophomore Troy Miller (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) before sophomore Mike Vitcavich (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) scored the go-ahead run on a Nittany Lion error, giving Stevenson a 6-5 advantage.
However, the lead was short-lived as the Nittany Lions loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh following a Stevenson error. Cataldo tied the game with an RBI-single to left before Tim Gonzalez reached on a throwing error by the Mustangs that should have been the final out of the inning, allowing the last two runs to score, giving Penn State Harrisburg the victory.
Junior Tom Goulian (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) went 4-for-4 to lead the Mustangs offensively while Hallam was 3-for-5 with one RBI. Merkel also had two hits.
Freshman Trevor Fitzsimmons (Toms River, N.J./Toms River) suffered the loss after surrendering three runs on just two hits over 3.1 innings of work. All three of the runs were unearned.
Stevenson travels to No. 17 Johns Hopkins on Thursday, April 4. First pitch is at 3:30 p.m.
