Bratter, Johnson Lead Mustangs in 8-0 Shutout Over Local Rival McDaniel

Box Score

STEVENSON, Md. - Stevenson baseball seniors Matt Bratter (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) and Heath Johnson (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) totaled two hits and two RBIs each while three pitchers allowed just six hits as the Mustangs posted an 8-0 shutout victory over local rival McDaniel Thursday at Park Field.

Stevenson (3-1) has now won four-straight at home, including three this season, outscoring its opponents 32-9 during that time. Wednesday also marked the 198th career victory for head coach Jason Tawney.

The Mustangs scored the only run they would need in the bottom of the third after Johnson led off the inning with a walk and then was sacrificed to third on a bunt by senior Chris DeFeo (Columbia, Md./Long Reach). Johnson scored a sacrfice fly to left by junior Tom Goulian (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon).

Stevenson added three more runs in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead on RBI singles by Bratter and Johnson and an RBI-double by freshman Davis Grove (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill).

Goulian scored the team's fifth run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI-single by sophomore Troy Miller (Shrewsbury, Md./Susquehannock) before the Mustangs capped the scoring with three runs in the eighth on RBI-doubles by Johnson and junior Scott Merkel (Hampstead, Md./Calvert Hall) and an RBI-single by Bratter.

Johnson finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs while Bratter was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Goulian also had two hits.

Johnson has had a hit in all four of the team's games this season and currently owns a five-game hitting streak dating back to last season. Miller has also had a hit in each of the team's games this season.

Freshman Alec Romanowski (Endwell, N.Y./Maine Endwell) made his first career start Wednesday, scattering four hits over 7.0 innings while walking two and striking out one. He combined with junior Ryan Kellough (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) and senior Andrew Haab (Glen Burnie, Md./Old Mill) to post the team's first victory since a 5-0 win over Penn State Harrisburg at home on Feb. 25, 2012, a streak of 44 games.

Sean Sivo was 2-for-4 with a stolen base to lead the Green Terror (0-2).

Stevenson continues its 10-game homestand on Saturday with a non-conference doubleheader with City College of New York. First pitch is at noon.
