Johnson, Greg Myers Lead Mustangs to 7-2 Win Over Penn State Harrisburg

Box Score

STEVENSON, Md. - Stevenson baseball senior Heath Johnson (New Castle, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and junior Greg Myers (Baltimore, Md./Parkville) allowed just hits over 7.0 innings while striking as the Mustangs defeated Penn State Harrisburg Wednesday at Park Field, 7-2.

The win was the third-straight at home for Stevenson (2-1) and fifth out of the last seven. It was also the 197th in the 11-year career of head coach Jason Tawney.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when the Mustangs loaded the bases with one out before Johnson hit a two-out, two-run single to right center to score junior Scott Merkel (Hampstead, Md./Calvert Hall) and sophomore Troy Miller (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) to give them a 2-0 lead.

Stevenson would add two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles by Miller and Merkel to push its lead to four.

Meanwhile, Myers was cruising in his Mustang debut, striking out five through the first three innings and allowing just one hit. He retired 21 of the 24 batters he faced and did not allow a walk.

A transfer from CCBC Essex, Meyers appeared in 83 games for the Knights, totaling 76 strikeouts, a 5.24 ERA and a 6-6 record in 89.1 innings pitched.

Stevenson capped its scoring with a three-run eighth, highlighted by a two-run single by Johnson that scored junior Tom Goulian (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) and senior Matt Bratter (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive). Johnson scored the third run on a fielder's choice by senior Josh Morris (Gambrills, Md./Arundel).

The Nittany Lions (0-1) scored two runs in the top of the ninth off of freshman Matt Myers (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) who allowed four hits and one earned run while striking out two in two innings of work.

Miller also went 3-for-4 for the Mustangs while Merkel and Bratter each had two hits.
